What to Order on iHerb for the First Time: Build Your First Cart

What to Order on iHerb for the First Time: Putting Together Your First Cart
It is easy to turn your first iHerb order into a huge cart filled with vitamins, cosmetics, superfoods, and products with tens of thousands of reviews.

But that is not the best way to start exploring iHerb.

A good first cart is not a collection of ten “essential” supplements. It is a few products you genuinely need and that make sense to order from iHerb.

The main rule for a first order: do not buy a product simply because it is a bestseller, has attractive packaging, or has tens of thousands of reviews. First decide why you need it, compare the ingredients and dosage, and only then add it to your cart.

Table of contents

Where to start with your first iHerb order

Before opening the bestsellers section, I would start with a simple question:

What was I already planning to buy soon?

For example:

  • you have run out of shampoo;
  • you need a moisturizer or sunscreen;
  • you regularly buy nut butter or tea;
  • you need protein or creatine;
  • a healthcare professional recommended a specific supplement;
  • you are looking for a familiar product for your child;
  • you need household cleaning or personal hygiene products.

These are the products I would use as the starting point for a cart.

iHerb has long been more than a vitamin store. The platform now includes beauty products, food, sports nutrition, children’s products, household items, pet supplies, and personal care.

So it is perfectly reasonable to place your first iHerb order and not buy a single dietary supplement.

Should you buy vitamins and supplements in your first order?

You can, but only if you understand why you are buying a particular product.

I would avoid the idea of a universal checklist:

vitamin D + omega-3 + magnesium + vitamin C + zinc = essential for everyone.

No universal combination like this exists.

The need for supplements depends on diet, age, health conditions, medications, laboratory results, and other individual factors.

If you already take a specific supplement or a specialist has recommended one, iHerb can be useful for comparing:

  • ingredients;
  • dosage;
  • the form of the nutrient;
  • servings;
  • cost per serving;
  • brands.

But I would not immediately buy five bottles “just in case.”

Omega-3

Omega-3 remains one of iHerb’s most popular categories.

For example, California Gold Nutrition Omega-3 Premium Fish Oil is currently among the platform’s bestsellers. California Gold Nutrition, Omega-3 Premium Fish Oil →

When choosing fish oil, however, I would not focus only on the statement “1,000 mg fish oil.”

The amounts of the main omega-3 fatty acids are more important:

  • EPA;
  • DHA.

Two bottles labeled “1,000 mg Fish Oil” can contain noticeably different amounts of EPA and DHA.

Compare the EPA + DHA amount per serving, serving size, and cost per serving.

Magnesium

Magnesium is another very popular iHerb category.

Current store bestsellers include magnesium products from brands such as Doctor’s Best and NOW Foods. But popularity does not make magnesium an essential supplement for everyone.

If magnesium is appropriate for you, pay attention to its form.

On iHerb, you may find:

  • magnesium glycinate;
  • magnesium citrate;
  • magnesium malate;
  • magnesium oxide;
  • magnesium L-threonate;
  • blends of several forms.

Different forms vary in elemental magnesium content, tolerability, price, and the number of capsules per serving.

That is why comparing two products only by the label “Magnesium 400 mg” is not enough.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one category where it is particularly easy to choose a dose that is higher than necessary.

iHerb sells products with:

  • 400 IU;
  • 1,000 IU;
  • 2,000 IU;
  • 5,000 IU;
  • 10,000 IU;
  • and higher amounts.

The availability of a high-dose product does not mean that it should be taken every day.

For most shoppers, I would suggest first understanding the form and dosage rather than choosing the bottle with the highest number of IU.

We cover this topic in more detail separately: How to Choose Vitamin D: Form, Dosage, and iHerb Options →

In brief, vitamin D3—cholecalciferol—is often the form people look for, but the appropriate dosage depends on the individual situation.

What about vitamin C, zinc, and multivitamins?

I would not add them automatically to a first cart.

Vitamin C and zinc are often purchased “for immunity,” while multivitamins are bought “just in case.” Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced diet, and high doses of individual nutrients can also have unwanted effects.

Pay especially close attention to the ingredients in combination products.

If you order all of the following at once:

  • multivitamins;
  • separate vitamin D;
  • separate zinc;
  • separate magnesium;
  • a hair-support formula;

the same nutrients may appear in several products.

Always calculate the total dose from all supplements rather than considering each bottle separately.

Beauty and personal care are strong categories for a first cart

If you are unsure where to begin exploring iHerb, I would definitely look at beauty and personal care.

There is less risk of buying a completely unnecessary product simply because a supplement is fashionable.

iHerb offers:

  • facial cleansers;
  • serums;
  • moisturizers;
  • SPF products;
  • shampoos and conditioners;
  • masks;
  • patches;
  • body care;
  • lip balms;
  • Korean beauty products.

Current iHerb beauty bestsellers include products from APLB, Vanicream, PanOxyl, Advanced Clinicals, and other brands. Browse beauty products on iHerb →

Do not start with five active products at once

A typical first beauty cart might include:

  • retinol;
  • vitamin C;
  • AHA;
  • BHA;
  • niacinamide;
  • another acid mask.

If you start using everything at the same time, it will be difficult to determine which product caused irritation.

For a first cart, it is more sensible to choose one or two new products and introduce them gradually.

Food products

This section is often underestimated.

On iHerb, you can find:

  • nut butters;
  • tea and coffee;
  • spices;
  • seeds;
  • flour;
  • cereal and grains;
  • bars;
  • snacks;
  • sauces;
  • gluten-free products;
  • plant-based products.

Well-known brands such as Bob’s Red Mill, Simple Mills, and many others are represented here. Browse food products on iHerb →

When buying food, I would compare the price per 100 grams or one serving, not just the price per package. A larger box is not always the better value.

Sports nutrition

If you exercise, your first cart could be built around this category.

iHerb carries:

  • whey protein;
  • plant protein;
  • creatine;
  • electrolytes;
  • amino acids;
  • sports bars;
  • other sports nutrition products.

For example, current inventory and bestsellers include creatine from Thorne and Optimum Nutrition, as well as California Gold Nutrition Sport protein. Browse sports nutrition on iHerb →

Package weight matters especially here: heavy protein products can noticeably affect shipping costs.

Products for children

My own introduction to iHerb began with children’s vitamin D, but the children’s section is much broader today.

You can browse:

  • children’s personal care;
  • shampoos;
  • toothpaste;
  • snacks;
  • children’s food;
  • products for mothers;
  • vitamins and supplements.

Browse children’s products →

If you are considering supplements for a child, check especially carefully:

  • age guidance;
  • dosage;
  • the amount of the nutrient in one drop or serving;
  • whether the same vitamins appear in other products.

Home and personal hygiene products

Another category that is convenient to add to a first order is everyday household products.

For example:

  • toothpaste;
  • dental floss;
  • deodorants;
  • soap;
  • feminine hygiene products;
  • cleaning products;
  • laundry products.

These are products that regularly run out anyway, so the risk of an impulse purchase is lower. Browse personal hygiene products →

What I would not recommend buying in your first order

1. A year’s supply

If you have never tried a product, there is no reason to immediately buy a package with 360 capsules just because the cost per capsule is lower.

You may dislike the taste, capsule size, or form of the ingredient, or the product itself may not suit you.

2. High vitamin doses without a reason

Vitamin D at 5,000 IU, zinc at 50 mg, or vitamin C at 1,000 mg may look “stronger,” but a higher number is not automatically an advantage.

3. Several products with the same ingredients

Pay particularly close attention to multivitamins, beauty formulas, and sports supplements.

They may duplicate vitamin D, zinc, vitamin B6, selenium, and other nutrients.

4. Complex formulas with dozens of ingredients

The more components a bottle contains, the harder it is to understand:

  • what is actually having an effect;
  • what caused an unwanted reaction;
  • whether each ingredient is present at an adequate amount.

5. A product chosen only because of its review count

The number of reviews shows popularity, but it does not answer whether a product is right for you.

A bestseller is a useful starting point for exploring the selection, but it is not a ready-made buying recommendation.

6. Very heavy, inexpensive products

For example, a large, inexpensive bottle of liquid may look like a good deal until you see the shipping cost.

Always check the final cart total.

How to check a product on iHerb before buying

I would use a simple checklist.

1. Ingredients

Read more than the attractive description on the front of the package. Check the full ingredient list.

2. Dosage

For supplements, check the dosage per serving and the serving size at the same time.

“500 mg” may refer to one capsule, two capsules, or several tablets.

3. Number of servings

Two bottles containing 120 capsules each can provide completely different numbers of daily servings.

4. Cost per serving

This is much more useful than simply comparing the prices of two packages.

5. Reviews

I mainly read reviews for practical details:

  • capsule size;
  • taste;
  • smell;
  • cosmetic texture;
  • packaging convenience;
  • whether the product matches the photos.

However, customer reviews should not be used to draw medical conclusions.

6. Expiration date

This is especially important if you are buying a large package or several bottles of the same product.

7. Shipping restrictions

Some products cannot be shipped to certain countries because of local rules or carrier restrictions.

8. Final price

Compare the discounted price plus shipping, not only the percentage shown next to the product.

How to get a discount on your first iHerb order

iHerb regularly changes promotions for new customers.

That is why I would not tie this article to one specific promo code: the code may change within a few weeks, leaving the article outdated again.

For example, iHerb’s standard offer for new customers is currently 20% off with code NEW20, but a temporary 25% discount is available during the anniversary campaign celebrating 30 years. This is why it is best to check the current offer before placing your first order.

Before placing your first order, be sure to check the current promotions: Current iHerb promo codes and discounts →

In our promotions section, I update active promo codes, temporary offers, new-customer discounts, and special iHerb deals.

Keep in mind that some products and brands may be excluded from a particular promotion, and promo codes usually cannot be combined.

Do you need a large first cart to get a discount?

Not necessarily.

A large discount percentage can encourage you to add several products simply because “they are on sale.”

But an unnecessary product with a 25% discount still costs more than a product you did not buy at all.

I would build the cart without considering the promotion first, then check which discount applies to it.

An example of a first iHerb cart

There is no universal cart, but for a first introduction I would structure it roughly like this:

A sensible first-cart option:

  • one familiar product you were already planning to buy;
  • one beauty or personal care product;
  • one food product or snack you would like to try;
  • one personal hygiene or household product;
  • one supplement—only if you already know why you need it.

This approach is much more useful than buying five different supplements and only afterward trying to figure out why you bought them.

What do people order most often on iHerb?

If you simply want to see where other shoppers start, you can open the official bestsellers section.

It is updated daily based on current sales, making it more useful than old “top 10 iHerb products” lists that circulate online for years. Browse current iHerb bestsellers →

Use this section to discover interesting products, not as a list of things you are required to buy.

Bottom line: what should you order on iHerb for the first time?

My approach to a first cart is much simpler today than it was several years ago.

There is no mandatory iHerb shopping list for everyone.

Your first cart should start with your actual needs, not with a bestseller ranking.

I would follow these principles:

  • buy products you genuinely planned to use;
  • do not start with a large number of dietary supplements;
  • compare ingredients and dosage;
  • calculate the cost per serving;
  • do not choose a high dose simply because it looks like a better value;
  • do not buy a year’s supply of an unfamiliar product;
  • pay attention to weight and shipping cost;
  • check current discounts and promo codes before paying.

If you are just getting acquainted with iHerb, it is better to keep your first order small. Try a few products you genuinely need, evaluate the shipping and service, and then build your next cart.
